Designing a new home is filled with anticipation and excitement. At Rudolph Architects we look forward to the close collaboration with each client to develop the home of their dreams and expectations. However it's important to understand that the process requires patience, hard work and lots of agonizing decisions in order to realize those dreams. As the outcome of the project will be determined by budget considerations, personal preference, site, city or county restrictions, and the tradeoffs between, it is our mission to skillfully guide you through these decisions to best meet your goals.
As few have an unlimited budget when building a home, it is important to have a clear understanding of your budget from the beginning and the factors that influence the cost of the home. With this clear understanding, your choices become clearer and we can guide you toward an optimal design within your budget to meet your goals. To insure adherence to the budget, reviews are scheduled regularly throughout the design process.
After researching your site and determining the site's building envelope, the process begins with several discussions regarding your design preferences. These are basic goals such as home size, view orientation, building materials, or architectural styles. To aid in these discussions it's often helpful for you to collect pictures of homes and details that appeal to your taste. From this collection and the natural characteristics of the site, a theme will be developed to be carried throughout the design of the home. The more you communicate your likes and dislikes, the higher the probability of success.
Once an overall design direction has been determined, the next step is to insure it satisfies the lifestyle needs of you and your family. From everyday requirements such as cooking or homework spaces to occasional needs like entertaining or overnight guests, we will carefully discuss and account for as many of these considerations as possible within the budget. By determining what functions go onto each level, the importance of each function, and any view requirements, an elevation can be applied to define how the different levels communicate between each other. This is where the design of the home takes form.
